Makhwaen มะแขว่น(Zanthoxylum limonella)
Also known as Thai Peppercorn in English, Makhwaen is an important culinary ingredient in Thailand, especially in the Northern region. A distant relative of Szechuan Peppercorn and Japanese Sansho, it offers a numbing heat with a citrus finish. Makhwaen is a crucial ingredient in making Northern Thai style Larb, among other dishes.Indigenous to regions of South & Southeast Asia, it grows as the fruit of a medium-sized deciduous tree with notoriously formidable thorns. Our Makhwaen is grown by small producers in the provinces of Phrae & Nan, Thailand.
